Project Overview.
Located in sunny Eastern Washington state, the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) is nestled between the beautiful Columbia and Yakima Rivers on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
The WTP Project will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which are byproducts of plutonium production processing during World War II and the Cold War era.
The WTP Project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technologically challenging cleanup projects.
Its construction spans 65 acres with four major nuclear treatment facilities; Pretreatment (PTF), Low-Activity Waste (LAW) Vitrification, High-Level Waste (HLW) Vitrification and the Analytical Laboratory (Lab).
The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc.
(BNI) and Amentum.
WTCC is subcontracted to the WTP Prime Contractor (BNI) to complete construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.
This position is located at the WTP Site, approximately 22 miles north of Richland, WA and works a 4x10 schedule, M-Th, 6.

Although unlikely, on occasion the FPC may be required to work off shift to support the WTP Project during emergent conditions.
Job Summary.
In this role, you will integrate safety and health requirements into complex project planning, design, and operations to reduce the potential for adverse impacts.
You will perform risk assessments, provide input on bid decisions, lead meetings and communications, and track and monitor performance trends.
Your recommendations will contribute to enhanced quality of safety procedures and work processes.
The Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) fulfills a key role in the development and administration of the WTP Fire Protection Program (FPP) within the Direct Feed LAW (DFLAW) Operating Island.
The FPE reports to the Safety and Health (S&H) Fire Protection Manager (FPM) and has the primary responsibility of implementing the FPP in assigned facilities.
With the goal of reducing fire- and life-safety risks, the FPE will also be responsible for assisting the FPM in the development, implementation, and maintenance of fire protection requirements applicable to safety & health during construction, startup, commissioning, maintenance, engineering, and operational phases of the WTP Project.
This position is a Technical Support Position for Category 3 Nonreactor Nuclear Facility as defined in DOE Order , Personnel Selection, Training, Qualification, and Certification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities.
#LI-EH1 Major Responsibilities.
Implements the WTP Fire Protection Program (FPP) and represents the FPM in assigned facilities through implementation coordination, facility inspections, and audits Develops, reviews, and implements FPP documents Identifies gaps and implements improvements in the FPP Recommends, reviews, coordinates, and approves compensatory measures for Fire Protection Systems (FPS) and Life Safety Systems (LSS) impairments in accordance with the Impairments Procedure Performs facility FP Audits and Inspections Performs FPP Self-Assessments Develops and maintains a working understanding of FPP requirements and their associated implementing mechanisms for compliance Identifies, records, and reports FPP noncompliance and deficient conditions Maintains a functional understanding of the assigned Facility Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA) Maintains a functional understanding of the inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) of fire detection and alarm systems Maintains a functional understanding of FPS & LSS Maintains a functional understanding of the Documented Safety Analysis Performs FP verifications and compliance oversight of Hot Work Permits and Areas Performs Technical Safety Requirement inspections for assigned facilities Supports cross-training of fire protection staff to improve proficiency of the FPP Reviews FPS work planning documents to assure necessary fire protection controls are included in FPS / LSS work activities Possesses and maintains a functional understanding of ITM for fire sprinkler systems and fire detection and alarm systems Supports the NFPA-72 Qualified Person performing ITM oversight of fire alarm and signaling systems Reviews and provides input to Hanford Fire Department (HFD) Pre-Fire Plans Supports HFD familiarization tours Supports the Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the environment Education and Experience Requirements.
Level 1 Requires a Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) related to occupational safety or health and 8-10 years of relevant experience or years of relevant work experience Level 2 Requires a Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) related to occupational safety or health and years of relevant experience or years of relevant work experience Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
Fire Protection Professional capable of office and field work within the category of Exposed Field Non-Manual (EFNM) Able to perform desk/office work, including writing, computer workstation processes using typical MS Office applications and telephone operation A demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and incorporate FPP requirements into project implementing documents A demonstrated ability to develop and make oral reports and/or presentations during planning meetings and training sessions A demonstrated ability to provide oversight of field activities through inspections, FPS & LSS ITM and operations, which will require walking, standing, bending, and turning along with wearing of personal protective equipment Able to load, transport, and unload fire protection tools and supplies specific to an activity, not to exceed 15 lbs.
